The "Oltenia" Philharmonic from Craiova, a well-known institution in the Romanian musical life, has been founded in 1904 and established in 1947 by a royal decree. The present activity is carried out by the Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, the Academic Choir as many chamber assemblies too.

Around 80 professional musicians form the symphony orchestra; the repertoire of the well-known assembly comprises masterpieces of symphonic music, operas, oratorios, requiems, musical jewels, arrangements of famous jazz pieces, covering a large historical period, from the baroque to the contemporary one.

The symphonic orchestra was conducted by musical personalities: Constantin Silvestri , Mihai Brediceanu, Sergiu Comissiona, Erich Bergel, Cristian Mandeal, Emil Simon, Horia Andreescu (Romania), Alexandr Dmitriev (Russia), Kurt Adler (USA), Wolfgang Grohs (Austria), Ivan Marinov (Bulgaria), Stanislav Wislocki (Poland); and collaborated with famous soloists: Pavel Kogan, Igor Oistrakh, Vladimir Viardo, Alexander Slobodianik, Mihail Homitzer (Russia), Jose Manuel Esteban (Spain), Thierry de Brunhoff, Pierre Yves Artaud (France), Weimar Stanley (USA), Marcella Crudeli, Fausto Zadra (Italy) , Ion Voicu, Eugen Sarbu, Silvia Marcovici, Dan Grigore, Valentin Ghiorghiu, Ileana Cotrubas, Viorica Cortez, Mariana Nicolesco a.o. Some recordings houses like: Romania (Electrecord - Bucharest, Technical & Musical Company - Arad); Switzerland - V.D.Gallo-Doron, Lausanne; Germany - R.Z - Berlin; USA - Disk Makers, Pennsauken, New Jersey realized highly appreciated CDs and LPS for the "Oltenia" Philharmonic.

In Italy, the symphony orchestra was invited to perform for the summer concerts with Katia Ricciarelli - the world famous Italian soprano and to take part in: The International Courses for Young Conductors from Manfredonia, Alessandria (Italy), Corsica (France), The International Competitions for Young Soloists (the finales with the orchestra): in Italy: "G.B. Viotti" (Varallo), "Rodolfo Lipizer" (Gorizia), "Citta di Cantu" (Como); in France - at The International Festival "Les Nuits Pianistiques" (Aix-en-Provence); The Opera Festivals in Germany and Italy (Spoleto).

The symphonic repertoire of the orchestra comprises: the symphonies integrals by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Rakhmaninov; The Symphonies no.1,2 and 4,6 by Mahler; The Symphonies no.1,5,8,9, The Chamber Symphony by Shostakovich; The Sea, the Prelude of a faun's afternoon by C. Debussy; the Bolero by M. Ravel; the symphonic poems The Preludes, Orpheus, Tasso, the Faust Symphony by Liszt; the symphonic poems Don Juan, Zarathustra, Don Quixote, Till Eulenspiegel, Death and Transfiguration, R. Strauss; The Firebird, Sacre du printemps; Petrushka by Stravinsky; Concerto for Orchestra by Bartok.

Founded on 1957, The Chamber Orchestra of "Oltenia" Philharmonic, from the beginning was specialized for preclassical and classical music promotion; during the passing time, the repertory was diversified appreciably till our days, when the stylistic aria of the performed works has included most of the contemporary music .

The assembly had realized LPs and CDs in collaboration with Disks Companies from Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Switzerland.

The Chamber Orchestra participated on a variety of the artistically international tours in Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Bulgaria, obtaining very good appreciations as from the auditory and the critical press also.


Conductor : Romeo Rimbu

Romeo Rimbu is the permanent conductor of the State Philharmonic Orchestras in Oradea (since 1990) , Ploiesti (since 1999) , Iasi (since 2003) and a faculty member at the Music University of Oradea (since 1998). He is also Artistic Director and Conductor of the New Transylvania Orchestra (since 1999), one of the most important orchestras in Rumania .

Maestro Rimbu regularly guest conducts most of the orchestras in his native Romania., such as Orchestra de camera a Radiodifuziunii-Bucuresti, the State Symphony Orchestras of Arad, Bacau, Botosani, Brasov, Cluj, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Satu-Mare, Sibiu, and Targu-Mures. Moreover, he has toured internationally with his Orchestras and performed with them in Seoul Arts Center(Seoul), Musikverein(Vienna), Herculesaal(Munich), Teatro Manzoni(Rome), Teatro Arriaga(Bilbao) to name just a few famous concert halls.

Romeo Rimbu has conducted over 500 concerts at an international level, including appearances in most European countries, the USA, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Some of the orchestras he has conducted in foreign countries include the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (China), L'Orchestre du Conservatoire de Rennes (France), the New York University's Contemporary Music Ensemble (U.S.A.) ,Korean Symphony Orchestra(Korea), Symphonic Orchestra of Athens (Greece ) and National Philharmonic of Moldova Republic.

Mr. Rimbu is also a recording artist with the Olympia label. He has recorded 5 CDs of the music of composers historically associated with the town of Oradea: M. Haydn, K. D. von Dittersdorf, W. Pichl. These CDs were recorded at the Olympia Recording Studio-London and earned the acclaim-five stars- of the specialists in the music of that period.

Mr. Rimbu has served on juries at various international competitions in several cities, including Mazara del Vallo, Erice, Marsala, Ploiesti and Tokyo.

Romeo Rimbu had been a professional oboist, who had given so many concerts in Rumania and other European countries as an oboist. And then he began his new career as a conductor. His education as an orchestra conductor included participation in an intensive conductor training course led by Master of Art Erich Bergel in Budapest (1996). In 1995, he received a scholarship from the Italian government, to study at the Accademia in Pescara. In addition, he has been a participant in conductor-training courses in Rome, (Accademia "O.Respighi"-1990) and in Oradea (1991-1993).
